Many people will have difficulties e-filing their returns because the names and/or social security numbers on their returns do not match the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) records.
If you got married in 2013, did you change your last name with the SSA? If so, be sure to file using that new name. If you haven’t gotten around to changing your name with the SSA, even you though you may be going by Mrs. Smith, your tax return will need to read your maiden name. Similarly if you were divorced in 2013, did you change your last name?
The name game also applies to children. Did you have a baby in 2013? Make sure when you report the bundle of joy as a dependent that the name is exactly as listed with the SSA. Hyphenated names, not only last name but legal first names, can cause a return to be rejected. Best thing is to look at your social security card for the exact record.
