When choosing a tax preparer, you have multiple options. Here are a few things to think about as you go through this process.
Check the Preparer’s Qualifications
All paid tax preparers are required to have a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). Ask how they keep abreast of the tax law changes. Ask about their fees. Are their fees based on a percentage of your refund? Do they say they can you get larger refunds than others and can they explain why this is so? Is the preparer available to complete your return in a timely manner?
Good preparers will ask you questions for a complete and accurate return. Review your tax return before signing it. Ask questions if something isn’t clear. Be sure the preparer signs the return and includes their PTIN.
All original documents should be returned to you and you should receive a copy of the final return. Remember, even if you don’t prepare your own return, you’re still legally responsible for what is on it.
